Peace Lutheran Church will celebrate Director of Music Ministry Burnell Hackman’s 35 years of directing handbells with a special concert this spring. The performance will be at the church, 737 Barracksview Road, St. Louis, MO 63125 at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 28
A commissioned composition by Dr. John A. Behnke featuring two handbell choirs, organ and brass will have its world premiere that evening. In addition, former ringers are invited to join The Bells of Peace and Archdiocesan Handbell Choir for the occasion. Participants will rehearse at 4:30 p.m. and then enjoy a fellowship meal prior to the concert. Music will be e-mailed with assignments so ringers can attend rehearsal prepared to play. Interested musicians should visit the Music Ministry website at www.peacestlmusic.org for additional details.
Mr. Hackman’s handbell career began at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Jacksonville, Illinois with the July 3, 1983 arrival of a three-octave set of Schulmerich handbells. A small but dedicated novice group performed for worship shortly thereafter.
This humble beginning led him to direct local ensembles at the Congregational, Grace United Methodist, Central Christian and First Presbyterian churches. He also formed the community-based Jacksonville English Handbell Ensemble that performed concerts and participated in various worship services during the summer.
Burnell served 12 years as Chair or Treasurer on the Handbell Musicians of America (American Guild of English Handbell Ringers) Area VIII Board, during which he was responsible for several area and national festivals. His ensembles provided worship leadership for six such conferences and the National Directors Seminar at the Basilica of St. Louis, King of France (The Old Cathedral). Actively participating in about 20 area and national events, Burnell earned Area VIII’s highest honor, the Outstanding Service Award, for his dedication.
Arriving in the St. Louis area in 2000, Burnell conducted the Grace Notes at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Arnold prior to his current affiliations with the Archdiocesan Handbell Choir at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis and Bells of Peace in Lemay. He has also served two terms as Chair of the Handbell Association of Greater St. Louis.
Burnell’s Illinois and Missouri ensembles have performed five times with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and Chorale. Our Redeemer’s choir appeared on local television, and the Archdiocesan choir is featured on the newly released CD, Angels Bending Near the Earth.
I look forward to sharing this milestone with you.
